Good idea! Leave them in the back yard… the common toad will need to eat way too many bugs than you could possibly give it to sustain a healthy life in captivity. Not saying it’s not possible, but they are native amphibians that fall into the same laws that regulate reptile and amphibian hunting. It is completely illegal to catch a reptile, snake or any other animal native to your area and keep it in captivity. Just FYI…
Besides… they eat all the bugs and mosquitos out there! : )
If you like frogs and toads, I would buy one from a breeder. One that is not native to the state you live in, one that is a common pet you would find at your local pet shop. I’m against buying reptiles from pet shops but that’s because I am a breeder of bearded dragons myself and I have seen too many reptiles being neglected by pet stores. Don’t get me wrong! I have seen just as many private owners neglecting reptiles as I’ve seen pet shops. Most of the neglect comes from over crouded spaces, not enough staff to care for the quantity of animals 100% of the time, and in some cases, min. feedings as they want to sell the animal for a profit. Keeping it and feeding it well for months, would only lower the actual profit the store might make on it in the end. If the animal stays at the pet store too long, they store will spend much more money feeding and caring for the animal than it will make from selling it later on. The main reason the animals you see in the pet shop seem so hungry when you get them home. Many die a day or two or a week later too! Be very careful when buying reptiles and amphibians from anyone. Stores, or private owners… a good breeder is best.
I would just leave them in the backyard. In a house, they will get miserable and could die. Out in their natural habitat they are much more fascinating.

No.
Why?
Because they’re wild animals and belong out doors, where they have the fresh air they need, the plant moisture they need and the right kinds of bugs to eat to stay alive.
You can’t catch flies for it! The poor thing would starve to death.
Taking something out of it’s natural habitat will just kill it,if it wasn’t born in captivity.
Living creatures weren’t meant to be put in cages.

Well, yes and no… it all depends…
You may not have to pay for a pet toads obtained in your yard but you must remember that some, if not all, toads are poisonous. so be very carefull in handling them… first you must see if you can identify the kind of toad then ask your friendly neighborhood vet about it. wild animals may also carry diseases that are harmful to humans. if all things checked out, well, go on and have a nice pet…
