what happened to the horned toad in south texas?

I remember growing up in South Texas that would be horned toad all over the place. My friends and I would play with them. But now I am not able to show my children the toads because they are not around. What happened to them?

They are an endangered species. Destruction of their habitats has devastated them. They only eat a couple of species of ants…their bodies rely on the particular amino acids the ants have.

They are now under Federal Protection and it is illegal to own one as a pet.
