I deal with reptiles I have a five foot python and study all animals. so! you have a toad well if you want to keep it you must like animals, reptiles. well first of all,if you put the toad out side no it will not die.WHY? im glad you asked.when winter time comes. A lot of the reptiles have a natural antifreeze in their system that puts them in a hibernation mode. For example, garter snakes, bees, spiders, and frogs. For example: If you put a garter snake in your freezer, it will freeze, but come back to life when you put it outside in the warmth. If you want to keep it, get a reptile bedding. You can buy this at the pet store. It would be something like Aspen or Cedar mulch. It comes in a bag and isn’t very expensive. You can use a fish tank. Just be careful, because toads can get big. Put a little water in there in an old tupperware bowl and feed it crickets or freeze dried moths. You can also buy at the pet store. Keep the tank between 75 and 80. Use an inexpensive stick on thermometer. If you use a heat lamp, keep it on one side of the tank and the water on the other side. Any other help you need, you can ask a pet store. If it seems too hard, throw it outside. It will live unless eaten by something bigger.

I had a toad that was a frequent visitor to my garage during the hot summer months. He liked to sit next to the tire or even up in the rim of that same tire of a car that was being stored in my garage. Several times I moved him out to the garden, only to find him back in the garage a few hours later.
I left a dish of water by the tire for him. Not sure if he ever drank from it. I never found him dead in my garage, so I assume he moved on at some point.
In my opinion, I would say leave the toad inside where you found him. He’ll leave on his own when he is ready.

You can put it outside. He will burrow under a rock or something and be fine in the spring.
