A Year With Frog and Toad

Can someone please tell me how to unlock the toad houses? And also, what is the little black cannon used for and how do you unlock it?

To acess the Toad Houses, you have to pay 5 Star Coins to remove the sign. Find them in the levels.

To access cannons, you have to find secret exits in levels - that first one in the image is accessed from a secret exit in the Tower.
