There are several differences between these Amphibians. The three most obvious (in most cases) are:
1. The skin of a Frog is smoother, while the skin of a Toad usually has bumps or knobs or a somewhat granulated surface.
2. Toads have large Perotid Glands just behind the eyes above the ears, while Frogs do not. These glands are larger in the males than the females and contain fluid that can cause irritation or even death to any predator that grabs them.
3. Frogs live in or very close to a water source, while Toads can live away from water, under fallen leaves, or even in the desert, as long as they stay moist in humid surroundings. They then only need a water source for reproduction.

what Bwana says is the usual "what everyone knows" half truths derived from a massive generalization and only looking into a small number of "true toads" and frog
Basically the truth is there isnt any difference.
bumpy skin, not living near water, large perotid glands are all features of species of the genus bufo which is commonly referred to as the "true toads", while most (but not all) anura (frogs and toads) that have the word toad in there common name belong to the family bufonidae (also referred to as the true toads just to confuse people) or bombinatoridae (the fire belly toads) and a high number of these dont conform in anyway to the "whatever one knows" guide to spotting toads.
the same is true of frogs there are loads of species that only enter the water to breed and some will drown in water more than a couple of inches deep or simply live miles from a decent water source and some are very warty.
examples
family: bufoindae
genus: atelopus
common name the harlequin toads or the stubfoot toads
a very smooth looking animal i would say, and because of the misguided "what everyone known" often now mistakenly called a frog.
family: bufoindae
genus: Ansonia
common name the stream toads
clues in the name where im going with this one, these guys are often found near and in streams and small rivers
there are loads more i just thought i would give a couple of examples
