What you want to do is look at a petstore like Petsmart or Petco. Even if you aren't buying from them, then you can note the names of the aquatic plants they use if your vivarium is more water based. If you have a more land based vivarium, then an organic plant seller is what you want. Either way, you want organic because they have no pesticides. Also, not all organic plants are right because although toads don't eat plants, any feeders may ingest them and cause problems.
References :
I suggest an African Clawed Frog - very low maintenance, just about as much work as a goldfish! They can be fed on a pellet and are pretty fun to watch.

Whatever you do, please do not get a turtle, for the very least, you will need a 55 gallon aquarium for an adult turtle - most of them eventually actually needing a 100+ gallon tank.
References :
They are an endangered species. Destruction of their habitats has devastated them. They only eat a couple of species of ants...their bodies rely on the particular amino acids the ants have.

They are now under Federal Protection and it is illegal to own one as a pet.
References :
http://www.zoocrewkidsblogspot.com

IN SINGLE PLAYER MODE
You have to carry the lost Toad to the end flagpole.

The thing you mentioned - jump on while the time is in double digits - only works in Multiplayer mode.
(See how Nintendo encourages friends and families to play the game?)
However, it's simple to just grab another controller and put him in a bubble (using (A) on sideways controller or (C) on Wii remote + nunchuk) and have the other player float along while you use the other controller and go to the finish with double digited time.
References :
Experience. Hope this helped!

You get the Red Toad House by going back to levels you have completed that show Toad's crying face in a bubble over them. You have to find him within the level and then complete the level while carrying him.

Those random encounters that the above poster mentioned nets you mushrooms that you can access before going in to a level.
References :
They seem quite likely to be toad droppings. It may be worth keeping them in a large pot for a few weeks as the unusual Lesser Dung Fly, Spelobia clunipes, has been reared from toad droppings in which the female laid her eggs.

Not a lot of people know that!
