How do I find a frog bellied frog that has escaped?

Posted by admin on September 27th, 2009 and filed under frog | 2 Comments »

He’s small and seems to have escaped his tank. I have 2 of similar size. How can I find him? Could the other frog have eaten him? If my cat or dog finds him and eats him, will it harm them?
Advice please.
I meann - will the cat be harmed by eating the frog?
Ok - Kermit wandered into the bathroom a while ago like no big deal. He’s back in his tank. Didn’t know they could escape like that. Thanks

Ohh, tough luck. That has happened to me once and he somehow ended up in my front yard. The only thing you can do is search every inch of your house–literally.

under a toad house there have been a toad just sitting there for a couple of days. Now I find these little tiny yellow balls all in a clump. Will the eggs be ok since it’s the fall season, should they be covered up before winter.

They will hatch in less than a week.

Are toads prone to urinating when threatened?

My sister and I were looking for toads because we have just got a new puppy and we didn’t want her to eat them, but when we picked up a toad with tongs, it excreted a considerable amount of liquid. This happened on several different occasions - is it a sign of stress or did we just squeeze the toad too hard?

No, you didn’t squeeze too hard or anything, I learned as a kid that toads do that when you catch them. It is their normal response. I guess it makes them untasty for predators.

grasshoppers barf out a molasses looking goop when you catch them.

A lot of animals do this sort of thing. I wonder if that is why humans sometimes pee or poo themselves when they get really scared. (I have never been that scared, but I hear it happens).

They were there first.

how should i clean a tank used for firebelly toad, to use for another frog?

Posted by admin on September 25th, 2009 and filed under toad frog | 3 Comments »

I would like to clean out my bigger tank. I have had a couple of firebelly toads in it, but unfortunately the other day igo in and one was dead floating on top of his water pool. so i have just the one, i would like to put another frog in that tank, so he has room to grow, he is a bull frog, but i am not really shure how to clean it after the firebelly toads have been in there, i have heard that they have many toxins. and what not. any suggestions will be helpful.

a solution of bleach and water is fine, just rinse it out real well, then wahs it again with soap and water, the rinse and then wash it again with just water

frogs soak up water through their skin, so if there is ANY residue the bull frog will probly get sick,, but if you wash it thoroghly, it will be fine

How do I tell if a toad is blind?

Posted by admin on September 25th, 2009 and filed under toad | 3 Comments »

I think my dog bit a toad in the eyes, and they’re kinda purple, how do I tell if it’s blinded now? I live in Mid-Michigan, if that helps.

Hold the toad up to a bright light and see if it moves to avoid it. That will tell whether it is totally blind or not.
Next, act like you’re trying to poke it in the eyes (Don’t really do it.) If it tries to avoid poking, it will show that it can see movement of objects.

If it fails these tests, it is safe to assume its eyes are damaged and should be kept as a pet, in a safe place.

How do I save a frog over the winter when I drain my outdoor pond?

Posted by admin on September 25th, 2009 and filed under frog | 7 Comments »

I put a small (300 gal.) pond in my yard this last spring and want to drain it for the winter, but there is a frog living in it. My plan is to catch the frog and put it in a small aquarium over the winter and then back into the pond when I fill it next spring. Looking for suggestions as to food etc. that will keep it happy and healthy in my family room until spring.

You have no need to "save" the Frog.Frogs only use water to escape from predators and mating, they don’t actually live in it. By placing a wild Frog into an Aquarium in your living room, you will in fact interfere with hibernation because of the temperature. I would suggest you leave the Frog alone to return to your pond in the spring…

why are toads coming out of my house I made a trench in the bottom of the house and theres 2 california toads?

This is actually very common. Remember toads are amphibians. They like cooler moist places. Plus the security from prey like snakes. It is a common misinterpretation that toads are reptiles, mainly because of the texture of their skin, but they are more similar to their cousin the frog. Actually this is good, because toads eat those nasty crawlies that you do not want coming into your home. You might say that they are good neighbors.

What household items can you feed to wild toads?

My daughter and her friends want to build a habitat in the backyard for Toads and bunnies, but what type of housing do bunnies live in in the wild, and what type of household items could a wild toad eat?

thank you!!!!

Well, in the wild Toads and Frogs mainly eat insects. You can go get these at the pet store (crickets) or you can feed them suplements of house hold items such as water of corse and also you can give them samples of regirgetated meat. You don’t have to chew this yourself! All you have to do is mash chicken meat up and cut it into very small pieces. I wouldn’t feed the toad this forever though. In order to live maybe more than two weeks I would deffinatly buy some crickets or catch some bugs outside (free food) and put it in the cage. Be sure that when you find the bugs you get them from a dessent place unlike a swamp (dirty and might carry diseases) but then make sure to keep it alive (toads won’t eat dead food). So either buy some cickets or go catch some crickets!

How do you keep frogs from coming the house?

My cousin is the mother of 3 and expecting one more and she believes that where frogs are snacks follow frogs. She lives near a cow pasture and a pond but it’s not right next door. Baby tree frogs have been coming in her house for about 2 days now. Is there a spray that can be used? Can she just use Sulfer and Moth Balls outside near her house to get rid of them. What should we do?

Before doing anything, contact the local Fish and Wildlife department (or Fish and Game) to make sure you are not breaking any laws. Many Tree Frogs are threatened or endangered and to harm them would be illegal. And if they aren’t protected, then the local authorities may know good ways to solve the problems =)

I’m assuming that you meant "where frogs are snaKEs follow…" instead of snacks… Snakes that eat frogs are not venomous, so you can also tell her that although they pose a nuisance, they are not dangerous. At least alleviate the concerns of the snakes in the house with little ones.

As for what to do about the baby tree frogs: They should all migrate out pretty quickly if there is little food and shelter for them. Tell her to seal up or get rid of any fruit for the next couple of days to guarantee that all fruit flies disappear, and vacuum/sweep/mop the rooms near the entrances to discourage other insects. That will encourage the frogs to leave.

I don’t know how you catch baby tree frogs, they’re tiny. I doubt you could safely spray anything short of spraying the frogs. Moth Balls would probably be best, again because they have more effect on the food than the frogs themselves. But it would have to be inside more than out - if she uses it outside near her house she may drive the animals IN.

Good Luck, if you find something that does WORK please Comment and let us know!
